Race retro

A brand new body for Austin 7 restorers and racers will be shown for the first time at this year’s Race Retro.

Renowned coachbuilding company Contour Autocraft, famous for its high-quality bodies and panels for the Jaguar XK range, has developed a Nippy-type body that will be available in steel and aluminium alloy.

The body features an entirely re-engineered bulkhead that will add significant additional stiffness to the whole car while decreasing the overall weight. In addition, Contour Autocraft will be offering buyers a choice of front and rear ends to customise individual builds. The body will also be available as a stripped-down restoration assembly featuring the main body tub and doors only.

7s for students

Students on the traditional sheet metalwork courses run by Contour’s training arm, Contour Academy, will be developing their skills by making sample sections of the Austin 7 body as part of a revised course curriculum being rolled out in 2013.

‘Skills learnt forming panels for the Austin 7 will give students a great grounding in the disciplines of traditional sheet metalwork,’ says Contour’s Bruce Macleod. ‘With the Austin 7 being such a practical and attainable classic, we envisage some students building parts towards their own 7 special.’

One of the key pieces of machinery used on the courses, Contour’s own-design wheeling machine, will be on the stand for visitors and would-be students to practise on. Come and have a go and talk to the team about the courses.
